Panchakarma Treatment, an ancient ayurvedic practice, focuses on detoxification and rejuvenation to eliminate deep-rooted stresses and toxins. It’s integral to achieving a balanced state of body, mind, and consciousness. This process involves five methods to balance the doshas in your body.
In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, maintaining a proper diet is essential to prevent the accumulation of waste, known as ‘ama’ or toxins, which can harm the body. Panchakarma therapy effectively removes these toxins, safeguarding the body against diseases.
Since this treatment is personalized to each individual’s body and varies based on factors like dosha imbalance, age, strength, and immunity levels, it’s crucial to consult physicians or doctors beforehand. Understanding your body’s dosha and imbalances in detail is essential for effective treatment.
To facilitate the release of toxins, the goal of poorva karma is to prepare the body tissues for cleansing before the actual purification process commences. This preparation involves following prescribed methods to encourage the effective release of toxins from the body
Snehana: Snehana is oleation both internally and externally. External oleation is called abhyanga (oil massage) and internal oleation is snehapanam or internal administration of medicated oil or ghee. This procedure helps to move toxins in the direction of the gastrointestinal tract.
Swedana: Swedana means fomentation, wherein the deep-rooted toxins, softened by the snehana procedure, undergo liquefaction through fomentation, preparing them for removal from the body, primarily through the purificatory process known as Panchakarma.
Vamana/emetic Therapy: Vamana, one among the panchakarma treatments for Kapha predominating disorders, is performed after completely preparing the individual about 5 to 7 days via poorvakarmas. Therapeutically induced vomiting is done by providing emetic drugs orally, making the subject vomit all the contents of the stomach.
Virechanam/Purgation Therapy: Virechanam, the most effective Panchakarma treatment for pitta predominating disorders, is performed after preparing the individual for the treatment via poorvakarmas for around 5 to 7 days. The virechanam process involves oral administration of laxative herbs to help in secreting pitta accumulated in the body.
Nasya/Errhine Therapy: Nasya Karma is a procedure where medicine is delicately administers through the nasal passage. Revered as the portal to the brain and consciousness, the nose facilitates this journey. As medicines traverse through, they permeate the intricate channels, extending to the vital Sringataka Marma and beyond. Their gentle touch reaches every channels associated with the eyes, ears, and oropharynx, dispelling the lingering Dosha and restoring balance. Taila (oil), Swarasa (extracted juice), Kwatha (decoction), or Churna (powder) are tenderly instilled into the nasal cavity, addressing ailments that afflict the region above the shoulders (Urdwajatrugata Roga).
Vasthi/Enema Therapy: Vastikarma stands as the cornerstone within the comprehensive framework of Pancakarma therapy, revered for its paramount importance. Vasti Karma is a specific therapeutic procedure, in which medicines are administered into body through Gudamarga or rectal passage. Occasionally, medicines find their route through alternate channels such as the urethra or vagina, known as Uttara vasti. There are various types of Vastis, as described in Ayurvedic classics. Basically Vasti can be classified into three types:-
Vasti’s effects are not limited only up to rectum and samsodhana of malas (evacuation of faeces), but it produces widespread systemic effects. It is specifically indicated in vatika disorders, but with the addition of various types of medicines, it influences all the dosas.
Rakthamoksha/Bloodletting: Bloodletting, known as Raktamokshan, emerges as the essential therapy for bloodborne and pitta-related ailments. This ancient practice offers a spectrum of procedures tailored to specific pathologies. Siravedha or venesection, is reserved for deep-seated or widespread rakta disturbances. For conditions manifesting as numbness or sensory deficits, applications of shringa (animal horn), alaabu (dried gourd), or ghati (bell-shaped earthen pot) are employed. Jalauka (leech therapy) finds its application in subcutaneous afflictions, while pracchan (scrapping) addresses skin-related maladies or localized swellings.
Paschat karma means after care, in these certain precautions are taken after finishing the main procedures to get the full benefit of panchakarma. It includes certain rejuvenating and rasayana therapy, lifestyle management, diet management, intake of herbal supplements etc.
