Ayurveda places a strong emphasis on postnatal and baby care, understanding the importance of restoring balance and vitality in both the mother and baby after childbirth. This traditional healing system recognizes the postpartum period as a critical time for recovery, addressing both physical and mental health while also providing care for the newborn. Ayurveda takes a holistic approach, considering the mother’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being as integral to the entire healing process.
Ayurveda emphasizes individualized care, recognizing that each woman has a unique constitution (Prakriti) and may experience different challenges after childbirth. Postnatal treatments are tailored based on the mother’s body nature, medical history, and any pregnancy-related complications such as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), Hypertension, or other diseases. These factors determine the postnatal care plan.
In Ayurvedic postnatal care, the mother’s overall health is considered holistically, with attention given to:
Postpartum treatments in Ayurveda are designed to rejuvenate and strengthen the body, which undergoes significant hormonal and physical changes during childbirth. These treatments help address common postnatal issues such as:
Ayurvedic therapies, including Abhyanga (oil massage), Panchakarma (detoxification therapies), and Swedana (herbal steam treatment), are often used to rejuvenate the body. These therapies improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, and support the body’s natural healing process.
Ayurveda recognizes the significant emotional and mental shifts that occur after childbirth. Hormonal changes and the stress of motherhood can impact a woman’s mental state. Ayurvedic practices like meditation, yoga, and herbal remedies help the mother regain emotional balance, promote mental well-being, and reduce anxiety or postpartum depression. This holistic approach supports both the body and mind, making the transition to parenthood smoother and healthier.
The newborn’s health is a priority in Ayurveda as well. Postnatal care includes ensuring the baby’s nutritional needs are met, whether through breastfeeding or other holistic practices. The baby’s body is also supported through gentle, natural methods such as massage and herbal care to enhance immunity and digestion. Oils are carefully selected based on the baby’s skin type, family history, and the surrounding climate. Herbal baths and massage are recommended once the baby has gained sufficient weight.
Common postnatal ailments like back pain, constipation, and bloating are addressed by Ayurvedic treatments. We begin by advising lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and treatments focused on digestive health and body inflammation. Once these foundational aspects are improved, we focus on specific therapies to target other postnatal conditions.
After a C-section, abdominal muscles and tissues are cut through, making recovery more challenging. Belly binding (using a tummy bandage) helps alleviate pain and discomfort, supporting the abdominal muscles and aiding in recovery. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles stretch, and after delivery, the organs return to their normal positions, but the abdominal muscles may not naturally close within 2 months, leading to diastasis recti. Wearing a tummy bandage for up to 12 hours a day for a minimum of 30 days helps bind these muscles together. After a vaginal delivery, tummy bandages can be used immediately, but after a C-section, they should be used only after the incision has healed.
