Your eyes capture visible light from the world around you and turn it into a form and brain uses to create your sense of vision. Your brain doesn’t have sensory abilities of its own. It needs your eyes to gather information about the world around you. Suffering from eye disorders result adverse effect on quality of life & tremendously impact on vision, education and psychosocial development. However, improper spending of hours on reading, watching TV, use of multimedia mobile, working on computers for hours’ stress, prolonged exposer to bright light, smoking, tobacco, alcohol, high oil and junk food has great impact on eye health

Ayurveda most ancient system of science mainly focus on “Swasthasya swasthya rakshanam aturasya vikara prasamanm cha” as mentioned by Acharya. The main motto or aim and objective of Ayurveda, is to preserve the health of a healthy person and cure the diseased one. Ayurveda explained importance of eye considered as “Sarvendriyanam Nayanam Pradhanam.” Among all the sense organs, eye is considered as one of the most important. References about eye care mentioned in “Shalakya Tantra,” one of eight branches of Astanga Ayurveda mainly deals with Eye preventive care and management of eye disorders.

Common Eye Problems:
  1. Refractive error (Myopia, Astigmatism, Hypermetropia)
  2. Computer vision syndrome/dry eye syndrome.
  3. Cataract
  4. Diabetic retinopathy
  5. Hypertensive retinopathy
  6. Glaucoma
  7.  Age related macular degeneration (ARMD)
  8. Retina detachments/ holes
 
Preventive modalities for eye health:
  1. Nidana parivarjana (avoid the cause).
  2. Avoid Vegarodha (abstain from suppressing urges).
  3.  Avoid bright light in room.
  4. Avoid smoking, alcohol etc.
  5. Avoid untimely sleeping.
  6. Eat Healthy.
  7. Follow 20-20 rule while using computer.
  8. Use sunglass while going out.
Ayurvedic procedures of Netra Samrakshana:
  1.  Netra kshalana (washing eyes with Kasaya)
  2. Gandoosha and kabala
  3. Paada abyanga / Shiro abyanga
  4. Nasya
  5. Anjana
  6. Ashchotana
  7. Tarpana
  8. Pindi, Vidalaka etc.

Various prevention modalities mentioned in Ayurveda along with a few changes in behavior including preventive practices are effective measures for maintenance and improvement of visual health and the prevention of ocular disorders among population.
